Atlas Editions U.S. Civil War Cards were released between 1993 and 1995 through mail
subscription only and have been out-of-print since 1996 (the cards are all copyright 1993,
1994 or 1995 but subscriptions were still available in 1996 as well). This card set is printed
on beautiful glossy card stock and most pictures are in black and white (naturally) but some
pictures are full-color, like pictures of uniforms or weapons from museums and the cards
that feature artwork instead of a photo. This is by far the most extensive card set on the
U.S. Civil War ever made, the back of each card has a write-up about the person, place or
event on the front.
These cards were delivered to buyers in "decks" or packets sent every week or few weeks.
The buyer could then remit payment which would continue the subscription. These cards
were never sold as a complete set or at retail, the only way to accumulate some or all of
these cards was to subscribe from Atlas between 1993 and 1996. There are 118 decks with
20 cards per deck for a total of 2,360 cards. The subscription included Blue and Grey
cardboard boxes for storage (it would take nearly 3 full boxes to make a complete set). The
introductory package included a facsimile Confederate 500$ bill, a Battle map of the United
States, 20 divider cards and the first box for storage. Also included in this set are 15 Civil
War Battlefield Maps which fold-out and provide additional information and the intro
package included a User Manual pamphlet as well.
The cards are all Printed in the USA. They measure approximtaley 5.5 x 5.5 inches each (14
x 14cm) The cards are all numbered by deck and card on the back and all cards include the
Atlas set pre-code number D3 602 before each card number. So, the card numbers would
read like this:
D3 602 dd-cc (dd-Deck number 01 to 118 and cc=Card number in each deck 01 to 20).
